With today’s youth, there is a great shortage of qualified foster parents. Many people are having a difficult time in just raising their own children, let alone someone else’s. But the truth is we must open our doors to these children to give them a chance to grow up knowing someone cares for them. Children are vulnerable, and the children in need of foster parents the most. They need the support, love and care that, for any reason, they couldn’t get from their own parents. The process of how to become a Foster Parent can be somewhat long and involved, but here are the basics:

Begin by searching the Internet about the Department of Child and Social Services and foster parenting in your state or county. There are also foster parent agencies in many areas that can answer your questions and help you during the process. These agencies will provide you with the information and the answer to all the questions you may have about this exciting role.

Virtually all states require training. During your training, you will often complete other stages of the application process. You will need to be fingerprinted and have a background check completed for security reasons. These can take a little bit of time, so try to get this paperwork turned in quickly.

The state will do a home inspection. Some of things they look for and at are: a bedroom for the child, adequate lighting, a dresser, a window, secured guns, cleaning supplies, and medications, plans for fire drills and other emergencies, and the temperature to which you water heater is set. They need to make sure that the environment in which the child will live is the best for him or her.

You also have an interview with a state social worker to discuss some of the responsibilities for and issues involved with today’s troubled youth. Most of these children have some sort of emotional, physical, or mental problems and the state want to be sure you are aware of such issues in order to be able to help the child. Many states will also require you to take a psychological test.

Once you are approved to be a foster parent, you may get your first child immediately, or it may take a little while. No matter when it happens, know you are providing a stable environment for these children to grow and many have never had that before.
