Everyone wishes to sail in a sail boat. The awesome view of the sea and the air gushing in you face cannot be experienced anywhere else. Then why don’t you learn how to build a sailboat?
To start with, you need to have a plan. You can design your sailboat or follow a proven plan for best results. Other materials that you will need: plywood, epoxy and paint, filler and fiberglass cloth. For best quality, use marine plywood.
To get started, mark the plywood for cutting, this is also known as lofting. The best way other than taking measurements is to trace the pattern. Cut the wood along the traced design.
One you have the different parts, assemble the boat in parts. The bottom and sides are to be assembled first. The rest of the assembling will depend on the design of the sailboat. Make sure every section is assembled perfectly and left to dry completely. Once the structure of the boat is ready, you can come to the joints.
Brush the joint edges with epoxy and put the two pieces of material together. Further wrap fiberglass tape with epoxy around the joints. Let them dry. Now to seal the seams of the hull, cover the outside seams with duct tape. For the inside seams, use epoxy resin then fill them with epoxy putty. Cover all seams with wet fiberglass tape with epoxy. Let the insides completely dry, and then cover the seams with duct tapes. Do the same to the outside seams also after complete drying.
Now is the time to build the remaining essentials inside the boat – deck, seat, storage area (optional), the mast, boom and most importantly the rudder.
So your sail boat is ready. Spend time to paint it, as you like. You can name it; give it a fun theme etc. It can be an extension of your personality. Marine paint is the best suited for a sailboat. Once the paint dries, coat the entire boat with a strong sealer to protect it from the harsh seawater.
Pat yourself on the completion of most of your boat and set to making the sail. Use a proven plan again, which will save you a lot of effort as a lot of geometry and science goes into designing it. Building two oars for a rough weather is a good idea. Attach the sail to the mast and set sailing!
