Tucked away in the inner ranges of the Himalayas is the tiny state of Sikkim. Part of India demographically and politically, Sikkim is the twenty second state to be annexed to the Indian Union, post Independence. While Sikkim is relatively unknown, in comparison to most other tourist destinations in India, it definitely is one of the most beautiful, unexploited regions in India. This tiny state is located in the northeastern regions of India and boasts of a cool climate all year round in the higher regions, especially in its mountains. The climate in the plains, which are at sea level, is moderately pleasant but very cold in the winter.

Because of the state’s geographical location, the flora and fauna of Sikkim is unique and the whole state is lush and green with all types of trees and flowers abound. The natural attractions of Sikkim are its numerous lakes and tea estates. The Tsomgo Lake and the Khecheopalri Lake are the two well-known lakes of Sikkim. The former is spiritually important to the Sikkimese as the locals consider this lake a deity and worship it, while the latter is called the wishing lake and legend goes that all wishes are fulfilled if one wishes standing on its shore. Both these lakes are surrounded by unique flowers in full bloom. A truly spectacular site indeed!

The Temi garden is the only tea garden in Sikkim and it produces one of the top quality Tea varieties of India. The tea garden apart from its robust tea is also a very nice place to hangout for the tourist. One more important tourist attraction to be mentioned here are the monasteries of Sikkim. These Buddhist monasteries are located in higher ranges and are very ancient, some dating 1000 years back. Some popular monasteries open to tourists are Enchey, Pemayangtse and the Phensang monasteries. A tour of Sikkim is not complete without a visit to these wonderful abodes of peace.

The people of Sikkim are of Mongoloid stock and very warm and friendly. The capital of Sikkim is Gangtok, the other important cities being Pelling and Yuksam. Getting to Sikkim is possible by Road and Air. There are flights till Bagdogra from where you have to travel to Gangtok by road. The state is well connected by roads, as this land is landlocked between the northeastern states of India in the south and China in the north. If you want peace, solitude and reflection in a beautiful natural setting, then Sikkim is the place for you.
